Work upgrades trestle on P&W line

For weeks there’s been heavy construction on the Portland & Western’s long trestle bridge across the Calapooia River and its floodplain outside Albany. The work is upgrading and strengthening the structure and will probably make it last many decades more.

Albany is about to follow through on spending some money for public art. The plan is to invite artists to propose something — most likely a sculpture that would be placed on a patch of grass near the Lyon Street off-ramp from Highway 99.

After years of study and weighing alternatives, Albany public works officials say the best way to deal with smelly solids at the Albany-Millersburg sewage treatment plant is to build an off-site facility to turn the sludge into class-A compost that could be sold or given away.
