Millersburg update: In court already

Written July 24th, 2015 by Hasso Hering

When Millersburg voters decide whether to authorize their city of 1,500 to borrow $40 million, chances are they’ll face a question more pointed than the one the city council approved on July 14.

Take a last look at this ‘tunnel’

Written June 22nd, 2015 by Hasso Hering

This is another mid-valley sight that’s about to disappear along with what’s left of the Albany Paper Mill. It’s the overhead tunnel on Old Salem Road that used to hold a massive array of piping and other gear connecting a cogeneration plant on the west side with the mill proper on the other side of […]

IP’s Albany Mill: A demolition update

Written May 18th, 2015 by Hasso Hering

Not much is left of the Albany Paper Mill in Millersburg except for an exhaust stack and piles of metallic debris. But the name at the former entrance off Old Salem Road remains, and it’s surrounded by a patch of well tended lawn. It’s as though somebody wants to keep our memory of the mill […]

No end in Millersburg power battle

Written May 12th, 2015 by Hasso Hering

The fight over Millersburg’s proposed forced takeover of Pacific Power’s electric business in town will continue for at least the next several months. Council members Darrin Lane, Jim Lepin and Clayton Wood, the longtime mayor, on Tuesday voted to put the power takeover before the voters.

Not exactly close in Millersburg

Written March 11th, 2015 by Hasso Hering

So much for the notion of forming a municipal electric utility in Millersburg. It looks to me as though Tuesday’s election results make it very unlikely that Millersburg voters would approve, in the foreseeable future, the borrowing that would be necessary to change electric suppliers.

At South Albany, rebuilding the field

Written July 31st, 2014 by Hasso Hering

As you can see and hear in the video, workers have been laying the groundwork for installing artificial turf on the football field at South Albany High School. They hope to be finished by the time the field will be needed, and I hope they make it.

Power: Millersburg council presses on

Written July 8th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Public skepticism notwithstanding, the Millersburg City Council seems determined to keep pressing ahead with the idea of replacing Pacific Power & Light and forming a municipal utility to sell electricity within the city limits.

Pacific pushing back harder

Written June 19th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

The fight over electric power in Millersburg is about to enter another round. The Millersburg City Council will hold a second public hearing tonight (June 19) on its proposal to kick Pacific Power out, take over the town’s electric system, by condemnation if necessary, and run it as a municipal utility. Pacific Power is expected to use the hearing […]

Pacific scores in M’burg debate

Written March 12th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Pacific Power seems to have scored a big point in arguing against the proposal that Millersburg expel the utility from the city limits and form a municipal electric utility instead. On Wednesday Pacific publicized a ruling it had obtained from the Bonneville Power Administration, a ruling that makes it unlikely that Wah Chang, the main […]

Pacific to Millersburg: It won’t work

Written December 11th, 2013 by Hasso Hering

Millersburg is contemplating taking over the electric power system within its boundaries in order to allow Wah Chang, the metals plant, to benefit from low-cost preference power sold by the Bonneville Power Administration. Pacific Power has now warned the city council that in the company’s opinion this won’t work.
