It has been about a year since Albany city officials prevented Willamette Community Church from completing the replacement of aging windows in its building, the former Albany High School. What has happened since?
Plans to renovate or restore three downtown landmarks — well, two landmarks and one other building — can go ahead now that the Albany Landmarks Commission has given its approval.
The church that owns the old Albany High School has run into a roadblock in its project to replace 34 windows in the historic building’s façade.
Two years ago the Albany Landmarks Commission refused to allow the demolition of three dilapidated old houses at Fourth Avenue and Calapooia Street. On the Tuesday night the same commission turned down a plan for two new buildings on the site as too massive and tall.
When the Albany Landmarks Commission convened last Wednesday night for two “quasi-judicial public hearings” about minor repairs to an old house, it was over pretty quick.
Anybody can see that the door of this detached garage at 732 Fourth Ave. S.W. has to be replaced. But before the new owner can do so, he has to go before the Albany Landmarks Commission at a public hearing and get the city’s OK.
Cumberland update: Window protection ok’d
On a bike ride Friday, I stopped at the fence outside the former Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Santiam Road to take yet another photo of the restored building.
