As someone who occasionally rides a bike across the Willamette River on Highway 20, I was interested in the news that ODOT is willing to spend money to study the idea of a “multi-use path” on the Lyon Street Bridge.

A dubious idea for the Lyon Street Bridge

The Lyon Street Bridge across the Willamette River has a bike lane and a raised sidewalk, each 6 feet wide. The City of Albany is contemplating a plan to combine them as a 10-foot wide multi-use path, the point of which is hard to see.

Albany-Corvallis Trail: One segment’s done

It was early in August when I took this photo. It’s on the south side of the new configuration of Highway 20 at Independence Highway, an ODOT safety project that had just been completed.

Albany-Corvallis bikeway: The wait continues

It has been 18 years since Benton County Commissioner Linda Modrell started talking about a bikeway linking Albany and Corvallis. Now, two isolated segments are actually being built, but where and when they’ll connect is anybody’s guess.

Hwy. 34 path: What it costs, and saves

The answer is $1.1 million. And the question, posed by reader Gary Womack in an email a few days ago, was: ” I would also like to know how much money this bike path will be costing the taxpayers (me),so that a very few people can ride their bikes.”
