A perspective from Oregon’s mid-Willamette Valley

It was a cowardly crime (2nd update)

Written May 13th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Through a rain-spotted windshield, you and I are looking at the East Oregon or Cloverdale Road overpass on Interstate 5 in Creswell, south of Eugene. From there, before dawn on April 13, someone dropped a chunk of masonry, a cinderblock, which smashed into a vehicle below and injured a woman sitting in the passenger seat. If they catch […]

What’s up at Folsom Dam?

Written May 5th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

If you’re traveling on Interstate 5 the next two nights, you might see a huge truck carrying equipment south. ODOT announced the oversize trip on Monday. And it’s more interesting — to me anyway — than just a big rig going down I-5. The truck, 137 feet long, two lanes wide and more than 14 feet […]

Much improved: I-5 rest areas

Written March 23rd, 2014 by Hasso Hering

They say that every product we use was brought by a truck. So it’s no surprise that commercial trucks make up a big share of the vehicles on the interstates. I was thinking of this driving up I-5 from Central Point to Albany the other day, a distance of a little more than 200 miles.

Incident on I-5: Bizarre and sad

Written January 4th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

You wonder what makes people act the way they do sometimes. Here’s what the Oregon State Police said happened about 4:30 Saturday afternoon on Interstate 5: Two women, 53 and 61 years of age, were driving north on the freeway when they ran out of gas near the Highway 34 interchange.

Smooth ride: How much longer?

Written December 27th, 2013 by Hasso Hering

The drive from Southern Oregon to the mid-Willamette Valley on Interstate 5 takes little more than three hours on roughly 200 miles of smooth asphalt without so much as a single chuckhole. And while you’re cruising along, you don’t often think about how to pay for good roads like this, or worry that it may get more […]

On I-5: If it’s Friday, look out

Written November 27th, 2013 by Hasso Hering

On Interstate 5, beware of Friday afternoons. That seems to be the most dangerous time to drive on western Oregon’s main north-south highway.
