For last week’s story on planned improvements at Albany’s Henderson Park, I went looking for the origin of that little park. I found that and a lot more, including a thread that led to a mystery that so far is unexplained.
In case you’ve not been keeping track, the sale of Albany’s Hazelwood Park to neighboring property owners has now been completed.
Hazelwood Park will be sold to three families living next door for $120,000, the Albany City Council decided on Wednesday.
The group planning to build a village of tiny houses for the homeless has withdrawn its offer to buy Albany’s Hazelwood Park for its project even though the offer is still listed on the city council’s agenda for Wednesday night.
Families living behind Albany’s Hazelwood Park, which the council has offered for sale, hope to save the wooded parcel by buying it and making it part of their yards.
Close neighbors told the Albany City Council Wednesday how much little Hazelwood Park means to them, so much so that they have taken to trimming the grass and keeping ivy from climbing the trees. Half an hour later the council voted 5-1 to put the park up for sale.
Replace Hazelwood Park? Not anytime soon
A “notice of filing” put out by Albany’s Community Development Department reminded me of a former city council’s sale of Hazelwood Park in 2021.
