A century-old sign of Albany history saw the light of day again when workers took the stucco off the brick wall of the old King Griff Building on the northeast corner of Third Avenue and Lyon Street.

For nearly 30 years ending in the fall of 2015, at the corner of Third and Lyon in downtown Albany there was a restaurant named Pizza King. Turns out the name had historical roots, and those are now being recovered, not by chance but by CHANCE.
A team of consultants led by Walker Macy, a Portland firm, now has the approval of Albany’s urban renewal agency to gather public opinion and then make plans for redeveloping the city’s Willamette Riverfront.
Just as I was posting the previous story about CHANCE, I heard via email from Jeff Blackford, the organization’s executive director, with more details about its planned move and hopes for the future.
CHANCE, a faith-based entity striving to help people in recovery from drug use, has plans to move into what used to be a popular Italian restaurant in Albany’s downtown.

Eventually — maybe one of these years — the oldest former church building in Albany might again get a steeple. But in the meantime it has only the base on which, once upon a time, its steeple sat.
