Painting a whimsical mural on a wall in Albany evidently does not protect it from the spray paint brigade, those knuckleheads who leave their ugly scrawls wherever they can.
A week ago I found myself in the back parking lot of the Habitat for Humanity Restore off Santiam Road, and I glanced again at the folk art on the outside of the Albany Skatepark.
If everything goes according to plan, the historic former Cumberland Church in Albany will be moved on Thursday, Sept. 2.
When I reported on the remarkable new mural at the Albany Skatepark on June 1, I could not find a clue to who had painted it. Thanks to a reader’s suggestion I now have information on that point.
A reader asked if I had seen the mural at the Albany Skatepark. I had not, but a bike ride last Friday took me past there. And now I have.
The “closed to the public” signs that had been posted at the Albany Skatepark on March 23 are long gone, and young people on bikes, boards and other things with wheels have reclaimed the popular spot. But the city says it’s still meant to be closed.

If you haven’t already seen it this weekend, go by the Albany Skatepark. You’ll be astonished at the way it looks: Cleaned up and devoid of several years’ accumulation of graffiti.
