A perspective from Oregon’s mid-Willamette Valley

A little smoke on my ride …

Written July 23rd, 2016 by Hasso Hering

On my ride Saturday, I could smell smoke from a long way off, which seemed a little ominous in the middle of summer when open burning is not allowed. Then I got closer and realized the fire, in a pile of grass straw, had been put out but was smoldering still.

A big waste? The details say no

Written December 5th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

When I first read about this item in the Albany City Council agenda, it looked like an example of federal money being wasted. I’m happy to report that as I learned more about it, that impression proved false.

Rail car on fire in P&W yard

Written June 16th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

One of my bike routes takes me past Albany’s Talking Water Gardens, and usually nothing much happens. Fire Chief John Bradner has negotiated a tentative agreement with the owners of two parcels, at 519 and 531 Lyon St. S.E., across Sixth Avenue from Fire Station 11. […]

Speed up that new fire station

Written April 26th, 2013 by

Just last month the state came out with yet another report on the catastrophic effects the next really big earthquake will have on everybody in the Willamette Valley and on the coast. And as always, the report said this calamity is overdue. It could happen any day or night. So you would think the first […]
