A perspective from Oregon’s mid-Willamette Valley

Pausing on a ride to watch …

Written April 26th, 2016 by Hasso Hering

Pedaling along on a routine little bike ride on Tuesday, I hear this angry buzzing in the sky behind me and to the left. The video tells the story, more or less. Well, not the whole story, obviously. I couldn’t ask the pilot his name or whose field he was spraying, nor indeed the exact nature […]

Spending spring break at home

Written March 22nd, 2016 by Hasso Hering

On my way through town Tuesday morning, it took me a while to realize why everybody was blowing through the school zone at the bottom of the hill at 40 miles per hour without even a token tap on the brakes. Then I glanced to the left and saw the school parking lot empty. Ah! It’s not a school […]

One small symbol of decay

Written March 20th, 2016 by Hasso Hering

Hwy. 20: Your chance to speak up

Written February 25th, 2016 by Hasso Hering

Roughly 10,000 drivers a day drive Highway 20 between Albany and Corvallis and back again, and most of them could recite all its hazards. But the state is sponsoring a safety study anyway. The question is whether anything will be done when this study is complete.

For less CO2, encourage cycling

Written February 4th, 2016 by Hasso Hering

As near as I can tell — and the search features of the Oregon legislature’s excellent website make it easy to check — not a single bill this session deals with bicycles. The majority Democrats claim to want to reduce carbon emissions to the atmosphere. Encouraging cycling is one immediate and low-cost way to accomplish that, […]
