To get to the Simpson Park Trail, you pass what is advertised as the boater access on First Lake. But the conditions are such that there’s no great rush of boaters at this neglected Albany lake.

Before you build anything, you have to clear the site, and that’s what’s happening on land where developer Charles Weathers of Salem intends to build what he calls Hickory Hollow, the first apartment complex to be approved in North Albany.

On my way back from Shedd on Thursday, I was glad to see that my favorite railroad bridge has not yet been replaced. I like all bridges, but this one especially because it shows that a simple design properly built can do a hard job for more than a hundred years.

Getting inside the downtown branch of the Albany Public Library took a little doing Wednesday but as usual, it was worth the effort. Going to a library always is its own reward, no matter the hurdles in the way.


Bids opened for Riverside Drive

The Linn County Road Department  this morning opened bids for widening about 2.4 miles of Riverside Drive from Oakville Road to Meadow Road, a long-planned project that will make the road safer for both motorists and bicyclists.

When you’re stuck in traffic, whether it’s stop-and-go on I-5 south of Portland or waiting through two cycles of a light on Ninth in Albany, you get the impression that Oregon just has way too many people. Or people with cars, anyway.

Jim Winkler says he was disappointed but not surprised when the Albany City Council last week turned down his request to rezone nearly 13 acres of vacant land in North Albany so he could develop an apartment complex that would include commercial services for residents to use.
