My riverfront beat is rarely quiet for long: Saturday night, it turns out, was the last time a scheduled wedding was held at Albany’s Wheelhouse because it no longer will serve as an “event center.” That’s the word from Janet Johnson, who along with her husband, Dave, owns the landmark building on Water Avenue.
On the riverfront beat, there’s an encouraging update from the Wheelhouse, which became an instant landmark on the Willamette River when it was completed in 2010. Much of the four-story building sat vacant in the years since then, but now it is filling up.
As far as at-grade railroad crossings go, the one on Albany’s Northeast Columbus Street wasn’t exactly a busy one. Now it’s even less busy because the street has been closed where it crosses the track.
CARA, Albany’s downtown urban renewal district, will hold a public open house Wednesday (June 4) to collect suggestions on which “public infrastructure” projects it should pursue. As Albany embarks on redesigning its Willamette riverfront, an evening bike ride along Water Avenue last week reminded me that a significant element of redevelopment had taken place nearly 10 years ago.
