If you want to know something about Albany’s lone set of red light cameras, the city’s latest report to the Oregon legislature is worth a look.
For one reason or another, Albany’s red-light cameras were on my mind the other day, and it cost me eleven bucks that I didn’t need to spend.
Something else has come up concerning Albany’s lone array of red-light traffic cameras, but before we get into that, let’s remember the obvious: We don’t have to worry about getting a camera ticket if we stop when the light turns yellow or red.
Albany will continue its Redflex contract for red-light cameras, the city council decided in a 5-1 vote Wednesday. Councilor Dick Olsen voted no.
Some jurisdictions across the country have been dismantling red-light cameras, but in Albany the police chief would like the council to authorize renewal of the city’s contract with Redflex Traffic Systems for another seven years without competitive bidding.
Red light cameras are under fire across the country, but not so far in Albany or elsewhere in Oregon. A closer look is in order. What do those other states and cities know that we don’t?
