Twelve Albany property owners are competing for money in the last round of urban renewal grants from the Central Albany Revitalization Area or CARA.
A week ago I walked into Albany’s downtown Carnegie Library to look at one of the Sanborn fire insurance maps stored there. I wanted to refresh my memory on something related to the former Cumberland Church.
With the exterior restored and a new coat of paint, the former Cumberland Church looked good when I passed it on a bike ride last month. Now the organizers of the Cumberland Community Events Center hope the Albany City Council can help their project along.
As you would expect, the former Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Albany looks kind of stunted without its little steeple.
Every evening lately I’ve ridden the bike past the former Cumberland Church to see if the steeple had been lifted off and moved in advance of moving the building itself, as is the plan. As you can see above, the answer is “not yet.”
The preservation of Albany’s former Cumberland Presbyterian Church may become an issue in the city council elections this fall. A remark by Councilman Rich Kellum last week implied as much.

Saturday was another milestone in the long and continuing saga of the transformation of the former Cumberland Church in Albany into the Cumberland Community Events Center.
