On a bike ride Thursday afternoon I looked west toward the Coffin Butte Landfill from Oak Grove Drive in North Albany. Whatever happened to the controversial proposal to expand the landfill and cover up Coffin Butte Road, which the county’s planning commission denied on Dec. 7?

Planning commission rejects Coffin Butte expansion

Unless the Benton County Board of Commissioners says otherwise, the Coffin Butte Landfill will not expand to the south and cover Coffin Butte Road with a mountain of trash hundreds of feet tall.

Dump expansion rests on subjective standards

A big expansion of the Coffin Butte Landfill is the subject of a public hearing before the Benton County Planning Commission tonight, Tuesday night. But the question is not whether the expansion is necessary or wise. Instead, it’s whether it meets some fairly nebulous or subjective standards in the county’s development code.

Coffin Butte lessens price jump

Republic Services has revised downward its intended price increase for dumping small loads at the Coffin Butte Landfill. Instead of $85.75, the minimum fee starting Jan. 1 will be $40.

Paying more for recycling less

Trash pickup by Republic Services in Albany and much of the mid-valley will cost $2 more per month because of the trouble with recycling. And we’ll be able to recycle fewer kinds of things.
