The photo relates to “climate” only in that our Oregon climate is, unfortunately, well suited to the proliferation of dandelions like this.
Democrats in the Oregon legislature issued a press release proudly announcing that the House had approved a bill requiring that children in public schools must be taught about “climate change” as part of all core subjects.
The bill is HB 3365, which cleared the House on April 17. The vote was 32 Democrats for and 23 Republicans against.
Rep. Sarah Finger McDonald of Corvallis, whose 16th House District includes part of North Albany, was one of he chief sponsors. The press announcement quoted her:
“Climate change is here. It’s real. It’s undeniable. And it’s hurting people. We must equip the next generation with the knowledge and skills to do better than we did. We need deep investment in climate education. We need the next generation to save the planet.”
Well, okay. But maybe the next generation might be better equipped to save Oregon, if not the planet, if it was sufficiently schooled in the core subjects themselves.
As listed in state law, the core subjects (for which the State Board of Education must “regularly and periodically review and revise its Common Curriculum Goals, performance indicators and diploma requirements”) are mathematics, science, language arts, history, geography, economics, civics, higher education and career path skills, personal financial education, physical education, health, the arts and world languages.
How are we doing on core subjects such as reading and math? Not that hot, on average, judging by the annual reports on test scores nationwide. The scholastic achievement of children in Oregon schools now ranks near the bottom among the states.
Maybe our schools already spend too much time on the topic the House Democrats want them to spend more time on.
In support of the bill, someone submitted testimony saying, “I teach as part of a magnate (sic) program that focuses on environmental education.” The program the person referred to takes place in grades K-2 and 3-5.
Perhaps that magnet program might want to focus on reading instead.
You would think that if the vast majority of Oregon high school graduates had a solid grounding not just in language arts but mainly in math and science, they could tell the difference between propaganda and fact where “climate” is concerned.
And if they could tell the difference, they would be equipped to deal with whatever challenges our society must face in the decades to come. (hh)
Even though the country voted against this…the indoctrination continues. The left must win over hearts and minds, parents be damned. “Science” is every bit as fallible as anything else, especially when funding for your “study” hinges on producing the “correct” results. Hopefully this will now change with our new administration in charge.
The sad news is that this indoctrination into fear is not science at alll, and the funding, teaching, and practice of actual science has suffered greatly as a result. This racket is either pure politics or pure religion, depending on your perspective or dispensary, and definitely not “science.”
Well said, Bob!
So Oregon is teaching kids its own version of the global warming story.
But will that include the policies progressives want that will hurt the economic interest of these kids (and their parents)?
For example, pass a law that bans all natural gas appliances, especially gas stoves. Impose a requirement to turn off all air conditioning in July and August. Pass a “no car” law that forces everyone in a city to use public transportation. Pass a “green” tax aimed at achieving environmental justice, especially on rich folks and polluting corporations.
A “green” planet cannot be achieved without coercive government policies. Only elitist progressives should be given this power. Every student in public school should be taught this.
Yup. Readin’, writin’, rithmatic…if you can manage those three subjects, your job will be eliminated by Artificial Intelligence quicker that you can blink. Although, we are currently being guided by an artificially intelligent Orange God King and that’s going really well.
Between the impending climate disaster and the Orange God King, it is unclear what’s making Hasso so upset. If you think as most climate scientists do, that the planet is headed off a cliff, and if you think it is okay to ship Americans to El Salvador prisons without due process, then why bother with education at all. Isn’t that why the Orange God King is tearing down the Dept. of Education?
So, hartman, where did you acquire your claimed ability to determine “what most scientists think?” I sincerely hope it was at a political rally or something you heard or read and didn’t have anything to do with a public school or taxpayer-funded source. What a racket. Some people will believe just about anything — and priests and politicians depend upon that fact in order to make a living.
Teach them about the Weather GeoEngineering that is going on in our skies, daily, all over the world. Weather GeoEngineering, Weather Warfare, Solar Dimming and Solar Radiation Management are all very real, look them up and learn more! Your Sky Today…
More Democrat crap–all of it–BLM, DEI, trans, more taxes. I think Dem legislators are a bunch of loonies. That McDonald is from Corvallis seems fitting.
So the Democrat party that runs Oregon without opposition passed a bill requiring indoctrination of children, as opposed to teaching critical thinking regarding that might help them interpret the weather and environment. Can’t have Oregon children thinking for themselves as they grow up. Why I no longer live in Oregon
The democrat supermajority will destroy this state.
Hey Sarah Finger McDonald why don’t we first teach them math and reading first? Oregon schools rank last in the nation and you want to teach them crap science that will not help them at all! Basics first!
Here’s the bottom dwellers in a ranking performed by WalletHub. There’s Oregon right near the bottom, surrounded by a whole bunch of Red states.
41 South Carolina
42 Nevada
43 Mississippi
44 Alabama
45 Oregon
46 West Virginia
47 Louisiana
48 Alaska
49 Arizona
50 Oklahoma
51 New Mexico
And is WalletHub’s top ten. Those easterners seem to fare pretty well.
1 Massachusetts
2 Connecticut
3 Maryland
4 New Jersey
5 Wisconsin
6 New Hampshire
7 Nebraska
8 New York
9 Virginia
10 North Dakota
Y’all are so disinformation vulnerable that I literally feel sorry for you. Big oil has spent the last 75 years aggressively putting out messaging campaigns to stop you from believing the science. Good job! You got duped and are rabidly in your little echo chamber here. Have fun with that. Maybe consider not procreating.
Are you sure you are an Albanian with a brain. The government including the Feds and Oregon make more money on a gallon of gas than the oil companies. I would suggest you and your ilk stop procreating.
There’s a reason nitwit trolls use pseudonyms. Too embarrassed to be publicly identified with this crap.
we gotta be a buncha fools thinking they wont need any money for this.

Pot Kettle Black
Oregon’s bill, HB 3365, basically only gives teachers legal permission and encouragement to teach climate topics using time tested (place-based), interdisciplinary approaches making math, geography, history, biology, etc. more relevant to what students and their families are experiencing in their communities. There is no new curriculum, no teacher mandates, just permission. Place-based, means teachers are encouraged to integrate climate resilience tailored to the impacts that their own communities are experiencing. Interdisciplinary learning makes subjects more relevant and interesting. Students learn better when real life problems are explored. Students in farming communities might learn drought resistance techniques in biology, they may write about their experiences with wildfires, extreme heat, or toxic algae blooms, in freshman writing. In kindergarten they might play with worms in compost and hear a story about how they eat leftover food. In science classes there’s no time to teach about the social and economic impacts of our changing climate, or home grown community led solutions for resilience. Resilience in the form of regional/community energy independence, food security, and watershed restoration. Students in rural communities might learn about the growing “Stewardship Economy” movement, ie: Wallowa Resources, in Lake County, once the poorest county in Oregon – now one of the richest from solar and wind farms, and sustainable forestry in the OPB documentary: Other Side of the Hill.
Health land is profitable land. Search: Western Landowners Association and read about how private landowners are working with scientists to restore their land for sustainable profit. Don’t be afraid of what you aren’t familiar with. The Oregon Education Association – the teacher’s union, fully supports this straight forward, simple, student requested legislation. A problem as encompassing the changing climate requires a holistic understanding, not simply an understanding of the greenhouse effect. Contact your lawmakers now as this forward thinking legislation moves to the Senate Ed. Committee, and hopefully the House Floor. Let’s prepare this generation for what 97% of the world’s scientists see as an existential threat to the ecosystems we all rely on for literally – everything. Don’t. be scared. Don’t be fooled that this is political, it makes economic sense.
What a hot bag of gas. If more people were to bloviate like that there might actually be an issue!
You and many others confuse weather with climate. We don’t live long enough to observe climatic changes, which are measured in 100s of years, not a decade
Hi Brian: Most climate models use a 30-year average to summarize general weather patterns. My research on this topic at OSU took place under the guidance of our State Climatologist at the time, George Taylor, and I focused on the last 500 years on the Oregon Coast Range, with the Willamette River as the eastern-most boundary. The climate has not changed significantly during that time, and there is little evidence it is changing dramatically now. Think of all the money spent on proving “scientific consensus” regarding this fearful “prediction” since 1990 and realize that the fear mongers have been paid very well — and the rest of us have suffered the consequences — despite a nearly .000 batting average. It’s been really incredible how successful this racket has been for so long — but as a very wise man once pointed out: “there’s one born every minute.”
Thank you for your intellectual honesty, Bob. A very good litmus test of “climate change” is to check ocean levels between now and say, 500 years ago. There are many cities built within tidal zones, including Portland, but more obviously San Francisco or in Europe, London (the Thames is tidal). It can be shown that sea levels have not changed appreciably (more than a few inches) in centuries of human contributions to climate. The scare tactics of the polar ice caps melting and raising ocean levels by feet or meters are demonstrably untrue. In fact, there is recent evidence the polar ice is expanding again, not contracting. But these truths are “inconvenient”. https://www.antarcticajournal.com/antarctic-ice-sheet-mass-gains-greater-than-losses/
The Menace of Public Education:
https://www.lewrockwell.com/2025/04/lew-rockwell/the-menace-of-public-education/
Many of our best farmers are educated in ecosystems and business management. Growing crops copying an eco system that has provided the entire earth with plant life only makes sense. Man has only occupied this earth for a very short time and all the short term progress they have made has failed to provide long term success. When something works there is no reason to modify it. Education and knowledge is the key to all successful progressive adaptations. People who devote their life to contributing to creating the most healthy produce and environment are ensuring a healthy population of people. “You are what you eat” are not just hollow words to get people to eat their veggies. Most of human illnesses are caused by what we eat, drink and breathe. Everyone knows that without a college education. People who are not concerned about pollution and toxic chemicals are in denial at best or benefit somehow from the effects of them. Either way everyone suffers the consequences of abusing the environment. We have allowed people in power to feel they have the right to control our well being just for their benefit. Their homes have air and water filters, they consume organic products and can afford to live in areas where their exposure to toxic environmental conditions is minimized.
What a sad blog post this is, missing so much. Teaching kids about climate change may or may not be a mistake, but all the MAGA minions are really burying their heads in the sand if they think this is a pressing issue, with all the other colossal things going on in the world right now. Our nearly 250 year experiment in democracy may be coming to an end, or may have already ended. It’s unclear whether the Trump administration will even adhere to the Supreme Court’s ruling. This equals a constitutional crisis. There is no debate on this subject. Trump has complete contempt for the Constitution.
His tariffs threaten to bring about a recession, and his threat to take over the Federal Reserve threatens to bring about a worldwide depression. If Trump manages to undermine the US Bond Market and destroy it, or nearly destroy it, that will mean an inevitable 1930s style depression.
Trump is deporting citizens without due process to foreign prisons that engage in torture.
The list is endless. Prices will unquestionably go up. The US taking over Canada, taking over Greenland, taking over Panama? It’s like some kind of nightmare out of a Kafka novel. The whole world is against us. But Trump is always by the phone, ready to hear his master’s voice, his master in Russia. What teachers in Oregon may teach kids about climate change just doesn’t matter.
I agree that democracy might be ending. And if it ends, it will be the Democratic Party, not the conservatives. Biden’s Presidency, such that it was, was an exercise in good old fashioned Marxist rule by committee elites. Biden himself was a prop-up figure-head right out of “Weekend with Bernie”. The Obama appointed cabinet members and “special advisers” all from the far Left, made the decisions, including eliminating the border and inviting in the world, whether or not merit. Merit was also tossed aside in higher ed, primary ed and government institutions. Instead, it was DEI and CRT with no regard to democratic rights. Free Speech was squashed as was freedom of religion, with Jews chased out of schools and other gathering places. Parents lost sovereignty over their own children in the school system. So, please, nothing from the Left about Trump and “SAVE DEMOCRACY” and “the GOP are NAZIs”. It is just so much BS. The Pot calling the Kettle Black.
You mention Trump four times in quick succession. Seek help.
Thank you Hasso for letting commenters post.
We need to hear of them to try understanding their thinking.
Each of us can have our own opinions.
The issue is when opinions become the law-of-the-land.
I agree!
