Bike lanes in the middle of Pennsylvania Avenue! In both directions, no less. Albany has no streets wide enough for anything like that, but I was glad to see that in the nation’s capital, cycling was regarded well enough to try to make it relatively easy and safe on the most prominent street.
Where to put your garbage and recycling cans on the weekly trash day is a perplexing and occasionally vexing question without a universal solution. Luckily, it doesn’t matter as long as everybody realizes there are no easy answers and acts accordingly.
On Sunday I wondered where “the bike lane” went and complained that it was gone. Now I can report that Benton County obliterated it by mistake and intends to make it good next summer or late spring.

Next time the Albany Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission is looking for some project, it might want to consider the fact that many modern traffic signals ignore people on bikes. Some communities have solved the problem with gizmos like the one in the photo, a bike-crossing button similar to those routinely provided for people on foot.
Bike lanes: Lots of broken glass
Riding the bike along some of Albany’s thoroughfares Saturday, what I wondered about was this: Where is all that splintered glass coming from?
