City panel wants to pursue ‘bike boulevards’

The idea of “bike boulevards” keeps coming up at monthly meetings of Albany’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission even though the first proposal of this kind last year, on Madison Street, died for lack of neighborhood interest.

If you have been losing sleep over the idea of a “bike boulevard” on Albany’s Madison Street between Second Avenue and Pacific, you can rest easy. The idea has stalled because of an apparent lack of interest by residents and property owners along the street.

Next time the Albany Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission is looking for some project, it might want to consider the fact that many modern traffic signals ignore people on bikes. Some communities have solved the problem with gizmos like the one in the photo, a bike-crossing button similar to those routinely provided for people on foot.
