Members of the Albany Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission keep talking about possible “bike boulevards” on selected residential streets. And I’m wondering why.

City panel wants to pursue ‘bike boulevards’

The idea of “bike boulevards” keeps coming up at monthly meetings of Albany’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission even though the first proposal of this kind last year, on Madison Street, died for lack of neighborhood interest.

Bike boulevards: Questioning the need

Albany’s transportation plan contains proposals for a dozen so-called “bike boulevards” along segments of existing streets. None have been built, but that’s no big deal because bicyclists don’t need them to get around town.

Two Albany advisory commissions would like the city to go ahead and improve Madison Street from Pacific Boulevard to First Avenue as a “bicycle boulevard.”
