Members of the Albany Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission keep talking about possible “bike boulevards” on selected residential streets. And I’m wondering why.
The idea of “bike boulevards” keeps coming up at monthly meetings of Albany’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission even though the first proposal of this kind last year, on Madison Street, died for lack of neighborhood interest.
Turns out that contrary to what it says on Benton County’s project website, we can keep calling the proposed Albany-Corvallis Bikeway by that name or something like it.
Ten years ago, the Albany City Council closed a short bike and walking path near South Albany High School to cut down on teenagers causing trouble. The city says neighbors are still grateful, but the continued closure appears to violate a city law passed in 1975.
About those sharrows: Do they work?
So-called sharrows started dotting city streets in Oregon in recent years. I’m wondering what if anything has been the result.
