Albany’s street trees were not on my mind on Jan. 28, but then I came across this broken specimen on southwest 12th Avenue, just west of Takena Street.
Back in December, Albany’s city forester posted a sign announcing the planned felling of a large pine in the 200 block of southeast Harrison Street. The century-old tree had become too big for its location, and now it is gone.
To the casual observer, the 700 block of Elm Street in Albany may look a little bare these days. A couple of good-size elm trees are no longer there.
A big old white oak, maybe one of the biggest in Albany, had to come down after being damaged last winter, and this week it did.
Wanting to save a big old walnut tree was the main reason the Albany Planning Commission turned down a site plan for eight townhouses on July 19. On Aug. 2 the commission rescinded that decision and scheduled a new hearing for Sept. 13, but the tree issue is still there.
