Santiam Canal: Two money disputes

Written February 23rd, 2015 by Hasso Hering

The good old Albany-Santiam Canal is back in the news, as it frequently is, and money is the cause. Albany plans to bill Lebanon for a share of canal maintenance costs. And in a seemingly unrelated matter, a contractor and the city of Albany are trying to settle on the final payments for a repair job […]

More ‘wetlands’ insanity

Written February 21st, 2015 by Hasso Hering

Somebody ought to add up all the public money that has been wasted over the years on studying or “mitigating” phony wetlands, that is, lands that are neither wet nor serve any of the functions of true wetlands. I’m thinking of this because in Albany now, we have yet another case.

Senate wants more expensive fuel

Written February 17th, 2015 by Hasso Hering

Democrats in the state Senate on Tuesday rammed through a program to make fuel more expensive and less useful. You’d think that they would have more regard for the people of this state. Instead, they showed they are looking out for the fat cats who speculate and invest in alternative fuels.

Is this project really necessary?

Written February 16th, 2015 by Hasso Hering

On a sunny and warm mid-winter day, a bike ride over the top of Valley View Drive and down Crocker Lane put me in mind of — what else? — an action by the Albany City Council last week. And I’m wondering whether the council really thinks it’s necessary to make two road improvements for which adjoining […]
