It was five years ago, in July 2019, that leaders of a new nonprofit in Albany were telling me about their plans for Hub City Village. Now they’re about to celebrate reaching their goal.
The first thing I noticed when I stopped by the Hub City Village construction site last Saturday was the concrete pool to the right of the entrance.
Hub City Village isn’t finished yet, but it is getting close.

Every once in a while, bike rides around Albany take me past 241 Waverly Drive S.E., where the Creating Housing Coalition is building 27 “tiny houses” in a compound it calls Hub City Village.
Thirty-five rental units have been built at Waverly Drive and Grand Prairie Road in Albany. They have looked finished for months yet remain vacant. How come?
Question for a slow day: Why square?
This story is about a pothole. Not just any pothole. Not the kind of pothole which Albany’s older local streets have in abundance. This pothole is special, or it seems that way.
