Once again this fall, we’re seeing one result of the deep drawdown of Green Peter Reservoir: Very turbid water in the Albany Santiam Canal.

The mud flows in the Willamette, too

It’s not just the South Santiam River and the Albany-Santiam Canal that are running dirty brown these days. The Willamette River water is almost as muddy as the canal.

Take a ride on Lebanon’s new Old Mill Trail

In the paper Tuesday morning I read about a new off-road trail in Lebanon, so in the afternoon I trucked the bike over there to try it out. For walkers, runners, and people on bikes, it’s a beautiful thing.

Albany Hydro: Hoping for better

Last year and this, sad to say, have not been money makers for Albany Hydro. The generator had to be shut down much of the time, but it started spinning again this month. And the outlook for next year depends on whether we get a reasonable amount of mountain snow.

A boat, they say, is mostly a hole in the water into which to pour money. At times the Santiam Canal must seem like that to the city of Albany.

Canal issues test Albany, Lebanon

Albany and Lebanon city officials have been unable to work out a new agreement governing operations and cost- sharing on the Santiam-Albany Canal, which serves both cities. Now the Albany public works staff is asking its city council for direction, and council discussion is likely Monday afternoon.
