Prompted by the demolition of a building at the campus of the National Energy Technology Lab, rumors are flying about what the U.S. Department of Energy has in mind for the Albany site.

In 2024, the government announced it planned to demolish Building 2 on the Albany campus of the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). Now that we’re in 2026, how come the historic structure is still there?

The leafy campus of the National Energy Technology Laboratory in Albany is a bit less so after a large poplar was cut down Friday afternoon.

Trump would close Albany lab

It was not unexpected, but the news is still a blow to Albany: The Trump Administration plans to close the Albany branch of the National Energy Technology Laboratory and transfer its work and equipment to Pittsburg, PA, or Morgantown, WV.
