For the last eight years or so, my bike rides through Albany have occasionally taken me past the corner of Fourth Avenue and Calapooia Street to check on a long-running story. Now the story has reached its end.
Chilly weather this January has not stopped builder Mark Siegner and his carpenters from putting the third floor on the first of the two buildings of Calapooia Commons.

A cloud of dust caught my eye from two blocks away on Wednesday, so I rode the bike to the corner of Fourth Avenue and Calapooia Street. There was dust because a man on a big machine was beginning to excavate the corner lot.
This week it looked like the long-contested redevelopment of this downtown Albany corner could finally begin. But not quite yet.

A few days after writing about the completion of Calapooia Commons, the mixed-use project at Fourth Avenue and Calapooia Street in Albany’s Monteith Historic District, I got a chance to check out the inside.
