Returning empties during Days of Corona

Governor Brown’s “stay home, save lives” executive order, in effect since March 23, does not mention Oregon Bottle Bill redemption centers. Lots of people may see the general coronavirus shutdown as a good time to gather up all those empties and turn them in.


A street project in West Albany: Ninth

Some time this spring or summer, a contractor for the city will start tearing up the west end of Ninth Avenue in Albany in order to rebuild it. Assuming, that is, that the caronavirus outbreak doesn’t change the plans.


A sign of work: Those stacks of ties are gone

Big stacks of rail ties stored along the Water Avenue railroad tracks near Burkhart Street in late February now are gone, and so is the aroma of creosote they gave off.

The Albany Planning Division on Thursday posted a public notice of the property owners’ plans for the northeast corner of Fourth Avenue and Calapooia Street, where after a prolonged controversy three century-old and dilapidated houses were demolished last year.


Even ‘closed,’ venue proves too inviting

The “closed to the public” signs that had been posted at the Albany Skatepark on March 23 are long gone, and young people on bikes, boards and other things with wheels have reclaimed the popular spot. But the city says it’s still meant to be closed.
