Punishing people for facts: It’s wrong

Written February 24th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Speech control in the name of preventing electioneering by public employees. That’s the issue in the latest dispute over statements by public employees, and this time it involved Albany. The city council on Monday had a chance to be tough about it, but it chose a softer route.

Trouble on the Cox Creek path…

Written February 24th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

It’s been at least a week since a vandal defaced the railroad underpass on Albany’s Cox Creek path. (Let me hasten to note right here that I realize that by following linguistic convention, I am unjustly defaming the Vandals. That northern tribe may have been among those who sacked Rome, but Rome had it coming. And afterward, if […]

Written February 21st, 2014 by Hasso Hering

(Please find the update below). This is getting a little old. I keep thinking that the “Road Closed” signs on both ends of Bryant Drive and Bryant Way outside of Albany may be outdated. But no, they’re not.

Union drops hospital initiatives

Written February 20th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Oregon voters won’t get the chance to learn much more about what hospitals charge and the princely sums they pay their top people after all, at least not this year. The Service Employees International Union had filed five prospective initiative measures dealing with hospital prices and spending, and this promised to shed some public light […]
