If you want to waste four minutes of your life, check the video of this intersection, the only one in Albany where cameras watch for drivers running the yellow or red lights. You’ll see no violations during this short span, but during all of last year the cameras sprang to life more than 6,000 times.

Old house demolition: Not yet

This house on Albany’s Salem Avenue, more than a century old, was destined to be gone by now, but its demolition has obviously been postponed. Instead of being razed, it’s getting its porches repaired.


Carbon tax: What it’ll cost

Democrats in the legislature are set to adopt a thinly disguised carbon tax when they meet in February. They haven’t said what this will cost everybody, but they should.

Work upgrades trestle on P&W line

For weeks there’s been heavy construction on the Portland & Western’s long trestle bridge across the Calapooia River and its floodplain outside Albany. The work is upgrading and strengthening the structure and will probably make it last many decades more.


The cleanup never ends

The wasteland under the Pacific Boulevard viaduct is not exactly Albany’s garden spot. Vagrants have turned it into a dump where repeated cleanups have to be done.
