Congress is off on a five-week vacation, and the talking heads on cable are complaining. They are wrong to complain. It’s good thing when Congress is not in session. Congress could stay on vacation for the rest of the year, and the country would be no worse off.
Before we get overly exercised about the proposal to ban smoking tobacco on Oregon beaches, we might want to ask: Where would the authority for such an action come from? And would a ban stand up in court if someone was charged with a violation of this imperial edict?
A month ago I happened to notice the weeds on the tennis courts at Linn-Benton Community College and groused about the courts’ deteriorated condition. The college maintenance department said at the time it was about to do something about the weeds. And sure enough, when I took another look this week, the old weeds were gone.
As you can see and hear in the video, workers have been laying the groundwork for installing artificial turf on the football field at South Albany High School. They hope to be finished by the time the field will be needed, and I hope they make it.
This is the best time of the year if you like blackberries.
This has to be one of the more optimistic road signs around. Or maybe hopeful is a better adjective.
Where the good berries are
Blackberries, one of the compensations making up for a long summer heat wave! And nowhere are they more plentiful than along the car-less roads of the E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area in north Benton County.
