Maybe this is the solution to the shopping cart problem that has plagued Albany and presumably other towns as well.
As you may have heard, the government has started distributing free N95 masks, some 400 million of them, through pharmacies and supermarkets. On Wednesday, a kind employee at Albany Fred Meyer asked if I had gotten mine, and when I said no, she handed me three.
On the first day of Oregon’s new law on grocery carry-out bags, the answer is that yes, as I had supposed on Monday, part of it will rely on the honor system.
You have to admit there’s a certain amount of suspense over how Albany retailers will handle the legislature’s ban on plastic carry-out bags, which takes effect Wednesday.
Only about six weeks are left before single-use plastic checkout bags are banned in Oregon. Better stock up while you can. Because soon you’re going to have to buy substitutes for all the uses for which you now get plastic bags free.
No idea for how much longer you’ll be able to get plastic bags like this at the Albany Fred Meyer, but its parent company says it will stop giving them out in no more than seven years.
