The reason we have pretty good bikeways and lanes in Albany and in cities all over the state is the Oregon Bike Bill of 1971.

Bike bills in the legislature: Taking a look

Last week I was glad to see that the road sign remembering Donald L. Stathos on this so-called “bikeway” between Medford and Jacksonville was still there. It made me wonder what this year’s session of the Oregon legislature had in store in connection with bikes.

Fifty years ago this week, the Oregon House passed HB 1700, the bike bill, whose chief sponsor was Don Stathos, a Republican from Jackson County and a resident of Jacksonville.

Memorial bikeway needs an upgrade

As far as bikeways go, the one honoring the father of the Oregon Bike Bill isn’t much. It’s nothing more than the narrow and occasionally bumpy shoulders of the Jacksonville-Medford road.
