Caution tape around a big old tree is always an alarming sight. And this one caught my eye over the last few days as the bike took me past Albany’s Takena Park.
Thursday’s bike ride took me to Waverly Lake to see if by chance this was the day that work resumed on keeping the lake free of summertime algae. And sure enough, it was.
Maple Lawn, the city-owned house and grounds on Salem Avenue, has been home to a preschool for a long time, but not much longer. The Albany school district has paid for the operation since 2021 but will stop doing so when this school year ends.
Tucked away in the southeast corner of Albany, Deerfield Park is far from my usual bicycle routes, but the bike and I made it there on Feb. 24. I wanted to look around after hearing about plans for making changes in the park.
If you’re wondering why Albany’s Bryant Park is still closed to motor vehicles weeks after the annual flooding has subsided — and even if you’re not wondering about that — it’s because the cleanup is not complete.
On Sunday the bike and I made a detour through Sunrise Park off Southeast Thurston Street. The visit reminded me of the flap over “wetlands” that delayed the reconstruction of this park several years ago.
Creek section cleared of junked carts
Last week, this view of Periwinkle Creek in Albany was spoiled by the presence of a bunch of abandoned shopping carts half submerged in the stream. On Tuesday, as you can see, the carts were gone.
