From the outside, the little house at 1024 Main St. S.E. doesn’t look much worse than many others in Albany. But for some reason it is considered “no longer habitable,” and on Saturday the Albany Fire Department will use it for “live fire training.”


After this fire, an excess of caution?

You can’t say Albany city officials are not cautious. Overly, extra, super cautious sometimes. As when they kept Simpson Park and the Talking Water Gardens off limits a full day after a fire nearly a mile away was put out.


Planning over, it’s building time

Everybody in Albany surely knows about the Albany fire and police buildings on which construction is starting now. So I thought, anyway. But on Tuesday somebody working in a downtown shop asked me if I knew what was going on where the old downtown fire station used to be. So I guess a recap would not hurt.

Design firm picked for police, fire buildings

If Albany gets the voters’ OK to go ahead with building a new police headquarters and a downtown fire station, the Mackenzie firm of architects most likely will get the job of designing both.
