Sheep killed as trailer flips

Written June 13th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

You’ll likely see this photo or one like it on the news tonight or in the local paper tomorrow. The Oregon State Police took it this morning along Highway 226 near Scio. A truck pulling a livestock trailer had overturned by the side of the road. The driver was hurt and taken by ambulance to the Albany […]

Still struggling with stinky sludge

Written June 13th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Albany just can’t seem to catch a break with the problem of solid waste at the joint Albany-Millersburg sewage treatment plant. As the weather warmed this spring, on bike rides past the plant and downwind from it, I once again noticed the outhouse odor that caused neighbors to petition the Albany City Council for a solution […]

Written June 12th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Good news on the cycling front — I think. The long-planned Corvallis-Albany bike trail may soon get $2 million of the roughly $4.8 million it is estimated to cost. The project ended up 18th on a statewide priority list of funding under the program known as Connect Oregon V (that’s V as in 5).

Sewer rates go — where else? — up

Written June 12th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Albany residents will pay more for sewer service starting July 1. The city council Wednesday had a choice of increasing the rates 6 or 8 percent, and by a vote of 4-2 it chose the more expensive option. Ward III Councilors Bessie Johnson and Rich Kellum were against it but were outvoted.

Obama, Australia and guns

Written June 11th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

President Obama likes to hear himself talk. That’s the only explanation for the amount of talking he does, especially when he talks the kind of vague nonsense he uttered in an online interview Tuesday after the latest school shooting. Among other things, he said his biggest frustration after one and a half terms in office is […]

Hands off the property tax cap

Written June 11th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

The League of Oregon Cities plans to lobby the legislature next year for a constitutional amendment relaxing the limit on property taxes. Let’s hope lawmakers will resist the cities’ blandishments. Instead, they should give cities better tools to reduce their costs.
