Is this pile of river debris a problem yet?

Written May 7th, 2024 by Hasso Hering

Not even Sunday’s high water and rapid flow in the Willamette could dislodge the growing log jam under the Albany railroad bridge.

After yet another winter, the log jam on one of the piers of the Albany railroad bridge has once again grown, and somebody asked me about it in a Facebook message.

People can easily see this pile of logs and debris from the Dave Clark Riverfront Path, where I stood on Sunday afternoon:

As I said in the video, state agencies involved with river navigation or water quality have shown no interest in this obstruction when I asked them in prior years.

Maybe the pile will keep growing for a few more years until eventually the Portland & Western Railroad takes steps to have it removed.

In the meantime, this feature of the river is just another point of interest to people walking or biking on Albany’s riverfront path. (hh)

Before recording the little video above, I parked the bike against the fence of Edgewater Village.

Hasso: Thanks for reporting again on the log and earth jam against the pier on the railroad bridge. I guess there is no “money” in it for any agency to remove it. I can’t figure out how the country or world works anymore. It doesn’t, it seems.

Is this something I should concern myself with? Answer: No

Is this a real concern? Answer: No

Can’t mother nature wash it all away?!?!?! Answer: TBD

Not like it is a MASSIVE cargo ship that lost power and control !!!
