A perspective from Oregon’s mid-Willamette Valley

Hope this doesn’t happen often

Written December 15th, 2015 by Hasso Hering

Last week, somebody went across the lowered gates at an Albany railroad crossing and lost his life, and people were shaking their heads why anyone would ignore all the warnings at grade crossings. And then I came across this today: Gates, flashing lights and bells being activated at the Main Street crossing without a train anywhere in sight.

Bike/Ped Plan: It’s just words

Written December 14th, 2015 by Hasso Hering

The Oregon Department of Transportation has come up with the draft of its new Bicycle/Pedestrian Plan, and it has asked for further public comment. To me the plan is similar to the much-ballyhooed Paris climate accord in this respect: Lots of words but no action to bring about a particular result.

Paris accord: Plant more trees

Written December 12th, 2015 by Hasso Hering

Don’t try to read the text of the Paris agreement on climate change. Its convoluted language will make you dizzy and confused. It’s hard to tell whether it means anything other than what news accounts are telling us, which is that 196 countries including the United States pledge to do a bunch of things to […]

Gates, bells and lights, and yet …

Written December 10th, 2015 by Hasso Hering

In his obituary, his family describes 33-year-old Elliott Duke of Lebanon as a “child at heart.” Maybe that helps explain why he was hit by a car while walking in the Highway 20 traffic lanes before dawn back in July and why his life was cut short when he rode his bike in front of […]

The Willamette: Why a ‘minus’?

Written December 9th, 2015 by Hasso Hering

On a bike ride Wednesday to celebrate the temporary absence of rain, I stopped at Albany’s Bowman Park to take a quick look at the Willamette River. It reminded me that a few days ago, the river got a B-minus on some report card. Why not an A or at least a plain B?

Restoration downtown: An update

Written December 8th, 2015 by Hasso Hering

You’re looking at part of the front of the Century Building in downtown Albany, at 117-123 First Ave. N.E., and it won’t look this shabby for long. According to plans reviewed by the Albany Landmarks Advisory Commission on Tuesday, it’s about to be restored to its former glory.

‘Sharrows’ on busy highways?

Written December 8th, 2015 by Hasso Hering

“Sharrow” sets the spellchecker abuzz because it’s not in most dictionaries. It’s a contraction that describes a pavement marking, kind of an “arrow” or chevron, that calls on motorists to “share” the road with bicyclists. Today’s question is whether sharrows should be painted on Albany’s Ellsworth and Lyon streets and on the Ellsworth Street bridge.
