A perspective from Oregon’s mid-Willamette Valley

What you see on the Perwinkle Bikepath

One of my bike routes through Albany takes me along the Perwinkle Bikepath, and on it you can see different kind of sights, from wildlife to trash.

Visualize this church as a county building

Written July 27th, 2023 by Hasso Hering

On a fine afternoon last month, I stopped the bike in front of the First Evangelical Church in Albany to take a photo. I wondered whatever happened to the congregation’s plan to sell the church, which I had reported in March 2022. Turns out those plans have borne fruit.

Still trying to make sense of this sign

Written July 25th, 2023 by Hasso Hering

This sign first caught my attention nine years ago, in July 2014. It didn’t make sense then or when I saw it again in 2016. It was still there on the second of this month, making no more sense than before.

River viewing piers being rebuilt

Written July 24th, 2023 by Hasso Hering

From the Dave Clark Riverfront Path, you can see one of the piers on the river being rebuilt as part of the Albany Waterfront Project. The other one is being rebuilt too, but you can’t see it from the land side because the path is blocked.

Don’t cut trees that help us stay cool

Written July 23rd, 2023 by Hasso Hering

These hot summer days once again show how useful it is to have lots of big trees along our streets. Mature trees make travel on foot or two wheels bearable and even pleasant by shielding us from the son’s searing rays.

This Albany trail stays ‘unimproved,’ for now

Written July 21st, 2023 by Hasso Hering

You can walk from Bowman Park to Talking Water Gardens and back along a well trodden path. Albany’s plans call for this path to be improved as the South Waterfront Trail, but carrying out that plan will have to wait.

Written in chalk, a cautionary note

Written July 19th, 2023 by Hasso Hering

Somebody had told me about a warning written in chalk on the walk at Albany’s Eads Park. On a bike ride Tuesday evening I saw that it was still there.
