Winter at Waverly Lake: Waiting for aeration

Written February 17th, 2024 by Hasso Hering

Anglers were lined up on the dock at Waverly Lake on Feb. 10.

Albany’s Waverly Lake is a picturesque feature of the cityscape, especially in winter when the water is clear. And city officials have not forgotten about the project to keep it more or less clear of algae year-round.

Last summer the city parks department hired a company from Washington state to rake unsightly mats of algae off the lake and install 12 aerators and a fountain to keep down future growth. The city council had approved $60,000 for the job.

The lake was cleared in August, but the installation of the aeration equipment didn’t happen.

This week, Parks and Recreation Director Kim Lyddane told me via email:

“The parts for the (fountain) and the aeration have been ordered and should be in by the end of next week.  I’ve reached out to the contract to let them know we would like installation by March 1.”

When this job is accomplished, chances are you’ll read about it here. (hh)

The bike takes me past Waverly Lake now and then, as it did on Feb. 10.

Nice pictures of the lake, Hasso. Like you said, the lake is picturesque in the winter. I’ll believe it when I see it regarding the installation of the aerators.

Albany must be pretty low on this contractors list? A few more months and they’ll be out actively harvesting again. Are they going to stall long enough that Albany will have to pay them again? Where’s the City Attorney?
