A bike ride Wednesday took me past the vacant lot at 503 Ninth Ave. S.E., where the city of Albany plans to have homeless people camp if they can’t or won’t go to a shelter.
No suprise: Albany’s official camp site for homeless people will be in a part of town that already has become something like Homeless Central.
It was four years ago, in July 2019, that I first reported on Albany’s Creating Housing Coalition and its hopes of building a community of tiny houses for people who have no place else to live. Now the group is about to start building the place.
Albany’s new city law authorizing officially permitted homeless camps passed the city council withhout opposition this week with one big question unanswered.
In order to discourage homeless camps all over town and comply with a new state law, the Albany Police Department is asking the city council to authorize designated camping sites on public and church property.
Hoping to prevent or at least to reduce illegal camping by the homeless, Albany city officials are working on a proposal to authorize temporary encampments in certain places such as church parking lots.
Hub City Village: When it aims to be done
Now that construction on Hub City Village has started, when will this planned unit development of 27 small houses in Albany be ready for otherwise homeless people to move in?
