An aimless bike ride through old Albany took me past the corner of Montgomery and Fourth, where the historic Goltra House attracted my attention because it has been beautifully restored.

An Albany couple working to fix up their house in an old part of town have been stopped, at least temporarily, because of city regulations that discourage vinyl windows and favor siding made of wood.

An Albany historic house, all boarded up

Plywood on the doors and windows is not what you expect to see on one of the stately old houses in Albany’s Monteith Historic District. Which is why the boards caught my attention as I was riding past 637 Fifth Ave. S.W. in recent days.

Old houses: Council takes the case

Unhappy with a city committee’s rejection of a request to raze three dilapidated old houses in the Monteith Historic District, the Albany City Council voted Wednesday to review the case without the applicants having to file — and pay for — an appeal.
