A perspective from Oregon’s mid-Willamette Valley

Take a look at police building ideas

Written October 29th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

The combined costs of Albany’s proposed new police headquarters and main fire station would range from a low of $21.3 million to a high of $25.6 million, according to the preliminary designs and cost estimates presented by five companies.

Drainage news: Behold a working bioswale!

Written October 25th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Starting in 2015, Albany will require new land developments of one acre or more to install facilities to collect rainwater from impervious surfaces, like pavement and roofs, and let it seep into the ground. On a ride the other day, I finally saw one of these installations in action. (Imagine my excitement.)

Pot tax: Wait for the slap-down

Written October 22nd, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Albany and other cities, including Lebanon, now have given voters another reason to support Ballot Measure 91, the legalization and state taxation of recreational marijuana. Written September 24th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

The planned Corvallis-to-Albany Trail has won renewed support from the Albany City Council. But its completion is still at least three or four years away.

Hare case: Small fine, huge principle

Written September 22nd, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Albany City Manager Wes Hare says he himself is paying the $75 civil penalty he was assessed for an alleged — but in my opinion unwarranted — election law violation even while the city council seeks to overturn the complaint in the Court of Appeals.
