The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has published a draft of new regulations to control the discharge of storm runoff by Albany and other towns. Whether this actually cuts down on pollution is hard to predict, but it almost certainly will add to the city’s costs.

The former Safeway supermarket in West Albany has been vacant for most of the last 18 years, and now the owners are negotiating with a potential new tenant that would put the property to a new use. It won’t, however, be a grocery store.

Here’s a heads-up about curbside parking in downtown Albany: If you cross the white lines painted on the street, you run the risk of getting a $25 citation, even if crossing the line is the only way to fit between cars already parked.

Like its Albany counterpart on the other side of town, near Interstate 5, the West Albany McDonald’s has been completely remodeled, and it doesn’t look like anything you were used to before.


Road user fee goes up too

Oregon’s low-key experiment with charging road users by the mile continues, and on Monday the fee goes up in order to keep up with the jump in the state gas tax.
