Looking north on Lochner Road from Ellingson Road on Thursday, May 2, 2024.
The south end of Lochner Road was supposed to be open again by mid-April, but it remained closed because of construction at the beginning of May.
With all this talk about housing growth in Albany, someone suggested that I “take a ride out Ellingson way and note the additional homes being built near the Lochner Road cutoff.”
That’s what I did on Thursday afternoon. I didn’t see any houses, but I saw plenty of signs of construction of underground sewer and water pipes for a big subdivision. That work has been going on for months, and judging by the now closed and covered trenches it seems to be just about done.
The development, on the east side of Lochner and north of Ellingson, is the Curry Meadows Subdivision. When the city approved it in 2022, the development was described as having 101 lots. A map of projects on Albany’s city website now says it has 88 lots.
What explains the discrepancy in the number of lots? No idea.
Curry Meadows is being developed by Lennar Northwest LLC, which also has been building the houses at the 128-lot Henshaw Farm subdivision at Ellingson and Columbus Street. The developer is the regional branch of a company that builds houses in 26 states, according its website
Lochner Road remains open and usable except for the very south end, which has been closed since the end of January. This is no problem for someone on a bike, but cars can’t get through.
How long it stays closed depends on how soon the contractor repaves the road. Shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday, no one was around and no work was going on. (hh)
Postscript: On Monday, May 6, this came from City Engineer Staci Belcastro: “The closure on Lochner Road was for construction of a new public sewer pipe to serve the Curry Meadows Subdivision. The closure was extended to allow for construction of storm drain and other utilities. Temporary asphalt patch is being placed today, and we expect that Lochner Road will be open to traffic on or before May 15.”

Lochner Road still closed for subdivision work
