You miss things if you do don’t get around your neighborhood every few days. For example, here’s a new and still unfinished funeral pavilion at the historic North Palestine Cemetery on the outskirts of North Albany.


Cell reception better now?

By the time I got around to the impending completion of Verizon’s new cell tower off Albany’s 53rd Avenue on Monday, the structure was already up, as is readily apparent in this image taken Tuesday.


There used to be a bridge here

As you can see — if you can see above the construction noise on the video — hardly a trace remains of the North Albany Road bridge across Thornton Lakes, and it looks as though the contractor has begun driving pilings for its replacement, which will sit two or three feet higher.


Legislators leave cyclists alone

Oregon legislators didn’t give much thought to bicycles this session, and that’s all right. Given lawmakers’ drive to make ever more laws, being ignored by them is not a bad thing. The session in Salem is just about over, and it looks like bikes and their riders are being left pretty much alone.


Benton’s jail: A mess of problems

Benton County officials want to build a new jail because the old one is potentially dangerous and hopelessly outdated. Now they’re trying to gauge what voters will accept. To that end the county invited the public to an informal “outreach” session Thursday, and about three dozen people showed up.


Albany city utility bills going up

Zoning: Neighbors get another shot

Residents of the neighborhood near the 200 block of Southeast Waverly Drive in Albany will get another chance to speak out on a zone change that would allow apartments to be built on a wooded parcel of about 1.4 acres.
