Clean-fuels for jobs? It’s doubtful

Written February 14th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Gov. John Kitzhaber has framed Oregon’s so-called clean-fuel program in terms of jobs. It sounds like wishful thinking. If this program showed promise of being good for Oregon by actually creating lots of jobs in the private sector without doing any harm, every legislator including Republicans would be for it.

Take a look at this carronade

Written February 14th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

If you want to see an old cannon, corroded but loaded with history, stop by the Albany City Hall and take a look.  Technically it’s a carronade, and the Monteith Historical Society has acquired it because of its role in Albany’s history. In the lobby of City Hall, about 100 people watched on Wednesday as it […]

Salvation to redemption? City says no

Written February 13th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

On Wednesday, the Albany City Council voted 4-2 against a language change in the zoning code that would allow the former Salvation Army thrift store on Santiam Road S.E, to be turned into a bottle and can redemption center. Here, on Thursday, I take a look around the site of the proposal, which the council […]

Watching the water rise, slowly

Written February 13th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Bill could strangle marijuana dispensaries

Written February 13th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

A bill that would allow cities to strangle but not actually prohibit medical marijuana dispensaries has cleared the state Senate Judiciary Committee. All five committee members including Sen. Betsy Close, R-Albany, voted to send SB 1531 to the Senate floor with a do-pass recommendation.

Council nixes Santiam Road ‘bottle drop’

Written February 12th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Albany stores and customers can forget about using a central bottle and can redemption center yet this year. Ignoring a unanimous recommendation by the city planning commission, the city council Wednesday agreed instead with a city staff recommendation that prevents the so-called “bottle drop” from being established in the vacant former Salvation Army thrift shop at 1224 Santiam […]

Alcohol stings: Stop state-assisted crime

Written February 12th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

It is the custom of the Oregon Liquor Control Commission to test checkout clerks at supermarkets and convenience stores by sending minors to buy beer, and then to nail the hapless employees if they fail to prevent the sale. This underhanded practice is wrong, and it should be stopped.
