Don’t forget Mondays

Written July 16th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

See how relaxed these people look? They’re clapping and listening to the band that performed at Albany’s Monteith Riverpark on Monday evening. These Monday events are less well known than the Thursday night River Rhythms concerts at the same place. But they nevertheless have considerable appeal.

Downtown commerce and the future

Written July 15th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

On a Sunday evening in July, we are looking south on Albany’s Broadalbin Street, and a pleasant view it is. The horizontal lines of stately buildings all point to the Linn County Courthouse four blocks away. And it looks like the prosperous center of a small American town. What we cannot see are trends that may threaten to make the image […]

The children of Gaza

Written July 14th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Here we sit in Oregon, safe and undisturbed, watching the TV news and seeing footage of little boys and girls lying in hospital beds in Gaza. Some have horrible wounds, more or less bandaged up. Maybe somebody needed to get rid of it and the landfill wasn’t open. Or he didn’t want to drive all the way to Coffin Butte and […]

Another sunset? Give it a rest!

Written July 11th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Every time the setting sun turns the clouds red or otherwise makes the sky look good, social media explode with images of the phenomenon. It’s as though people had not already seen the sunset if they were awake. And in case they hadn’t, it’s as though we picture takers think our snapshots can possibly do […]

A Saturday treat: Farmers’ market

Written July 11th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

It wouldn’t be a summer Saturday in Albany without the farmers’ market in the parking lot of City Hall and on Fourth Avenue in front of the courthouse. And one of the attractions is that usually there’s music too.
