A perspective from Oregon’s mid-Willamette Valley

Another year, another gun bill

Written January 16th, 2016 by Hasso Hering

We all say we want to keep guns out of the hands of crazy people. How do we do that? Not, I hope, the way it would be done under a proposed law the 2016 legislature may be asked to adopt.

A paper still worth the price

Written January 16th, 2016 by Hasso Hering

Lucky are newspaper readers in Southern California. They have easy access to the Los Angeles Times, a paper that rewards those who subscribe or — as I did Friday — go across the street to the 7-Eleven and buy a weekday copy for two bucks (plus 16 cents tax).

$30/hour would be twice as good

Written January 14th, 2016 by Hasso Hering

If Democratic lawmakers, initiative sponsors and the governor all think they can force employers to pay higher wages, why do they settle for half-measures? Why don’t they just go ahead and require that everybody with a job be paid, say, $20 an hour, or $30 for an even better deal?

Trains or water: A matter of priorities

Written January 14th, 2016 by Hasso Hering

This sign in California’s Central Valley suggests that farmers in the region think their state has its priorities wrong. Nature and politics have left their operations thirsting for water while California is spending billions of dollars on high-speed rail.

The bigger enemy is pain

Written January 13th, 2016 by Hasso Hering

As important as cancer research is, it seems to me that keeping people — especially very old people — free from pain is more important still. Obama said in his state of the union address the United States should cure cancer once and for all. Yes, but helping people who suffer unbearable pain would be better yet.

Plenty of space to ride a bike

Written January 11th, 2016 by Hasso Hering

5 We like to think of Oregon’s mid-valley as the ideal place for riding a bike. But as I hope the video shows, the central valley of California, away from the cities, is cycling country too.

CA gas price: We may be next

Written January 10th, 2016 by Hasso Hering

The Oregon traveler in California is in for a shock, or at least a mild surprise, when he stops for gas for the first time: The price of gas is about half a dollar more south of the state line than north of it. And that’s even though you do the pumping yourself.
