N. Albany SamFit reopening is coming up

Written April 26th, 2024 by Hasso Hering

This photo is almost a year old. Now this fitness center is scheduled to reopen next week.

It was last June that I stopped by SamFit in North Albany intending to do a story on when the place would reopen following a fire. Now Samaritan Health Services has announced the date: This coming Tuesday, April 30.

The fire happened in September 2022, and people have been wondering ever since how long the repairs would take.

On Tuesday Samaritan sent out a press statement saying it will conduct media tours at 10 a.m. on April 30 “in conjunction with reopening of the popular Albany fitness location.” The address is 380 Hickory St. N.W.

Samaritan also explained why repairs took as long as they did:

“Although the fire was contained to the area in and around the women’s sauna, smoke and water extensively damaged the rest of the two-story fitness facility. This was due to the lack of fire stops in the old construction that left gaps between the concrete exterior and interior walls.”

Fixing that structural problem and otherwise renovating the building cost more than $1.6 million, according to Samaritan. Some of the smoke-damaged equipment could be rehabilitated, but other pieces had to be replaced.

Just the other day, someone complained on social media about not being able to find out when the North Albany SamFit would reopen. If you are that person, now you know. (hh)
