The northeast corner lot at Hill and Water, shown one day in October, has been used as a parking lot.
A corner lot near the Albany waterfront may become the site of a four-plex of townhouses if a plan submitted to the city planning division is carried out.
The planning division is reviewing a site plan for new construction on the now-vacant lot at 135-139 Hill St. N.E.
A notice published Dec. 6 said the city notified property owners within 300 feet of the plan. The neighbors have until Dec. 20 to submit any comments.
The plan calls for four units, each with a one-car garage facing Hill Street.
The city’s filing identifies the applicant or developer as Dahled Up Construction, with an address in Jefferson. The company’s former address was on First Avenue in Albany, near the four-plex project site.
Company owner Joel Dahl told me about his townhouse project last year. Since then he has faced a number of criminal charges, and a newspaper article about that said the company advertised itself as under new ownership. State corporation records still list Dahl as the owner.
County tax records show the corner lot is owned by ABON LLC, the firm of Calvin and Angela Bontrager, Albany.
The lot, across Hill Street from the Calapooia Brewery restaurant, is on one of my bike routes. For decades the property was occupied by a garage and warehouse. The structures were razed last year. Since the rubble was cleared away, the lot has been used for parking.
More parking available across from the restaurant has been nice. But new housing on the waterfront would be helpful too. (hh)
